The program offers valuable insights into the modern landscape of global education, including the work of intergovernmental organisations such as the UN, as well as global academia and civil society organisations.

We will delve into the history, present, and future of the global education field, along with the career opportunities available to education graduates in Switzerland and around the world.

Connect with leading experts in global education, spend three weeks alongside a diverse group of peers from various backgrounds and countries, gain practical teamwork and presentation experience, and learn how to actively shape the future of education and development.

Entry Requirements

We encourage students from all subject areas to apply for this course who meet the following entry requirements:

Study Level:
Advanced Bachelor students (over 90 ECTS by July 2026) and Master students, PhD students and early career scholars

Subject Areas/Prior Knowledge:
Interest in global education and available career paths in this field

Language Requirements:
Applicants must possess a sufficient command of English (broadly CEFR B2 or equivalent) to be able to actively contribute to classes.

Fees and Discounts

The regular fee for this summer school starts from 3,500 Swiss Francs (incl. accommodation).*

The tuition fee includes:

  • All teaching lessons (incl. sessions, podcasts, guest lectures, group assignments, academic trip etc.);

*If you would like to arrange your own accommodation, you can select the option while filling out your application. The fee for the summer school will be adjusted accordingly.

Schedule and Classes

Our program offers a mix of daily interactive classes (Monday - Friday), Q&A-sessions and guest lectures.

Attendance and active participation in the sessions are mandatory to successfully pass the program. Beyond these classes, you are most welcome to join our social activities.

Please consider that outside of classes, field trips, etc., you will also be expected to do group work and self-paced learning. Please also note that the summer school is intended as a full-time program and we recommend students to not commit to any other time-consuming engagement during the three weeks of the course. The estimated workload per program is approx. 30 hours per week during the three weeks of the summer school. We will also expect you to prepare properly for the course. Instructions, podcast episodes, and pre-readings will be provided by the end of May to all enrolled participants.

Assessment

You will receive your Transcript of Records (stating your grade with "pass" or "fail") and a Confirmation of Completion by the end of July 2026. In order to get 6 ECTS credits for this Summer School, participants will have to develop and present a group project in the area of global education.

Christian Ydesen

Professor of History of Education and Education Policy Analysis, University of Zurich (Switzerland). A history of education expert specialising in global education governance, educational testing, and the role of international organisations such as UNESCO and the OECD in shaping education policy.

Haldis Holst

Former Deputy General Secretary, Education International. Global Partnership for Education, Board of Directors. An international education policy leader and trade union advocate for teachers. Expert in civil society organisations in global governance of education.

Karen Mundy

Professor, University of Toronto (Canada). Former Director of the International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP-UNESCO). A leading scholar in comparative and international education and global education governance. Her research explores international organisations, education reform in developing countries, and global partnerships in education. She has held senior advisory roles with international agencies and foundations.

Moira Faul

Executive Director of NORRAG, a global research network focusing on international education policy and cooperation. Her work centers on global governance of education, multilateral partnerships, and the political economy of education reform. She previously worked in international development and education policy analysis.

Maren Elfert

Senior Lecturer, King’s College London. Her research focuses on global governance of education and the influence of international organisations on educational ideas and policies. She has published on the history of the educational work of UNESCO, the OECD and the World Bank, global agendas such as the Sustainable Development Goals, and lifelong learning as a global policy concept. She also worked at the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) in Hamburg for over a decade.

Patrick Montjouridès

Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Zurich. Patrick Montjouridès has over 12 years of experience working at UNESCO. As a technical lead, he contributed to the Global Education Monitoring Report, the flagship global report on education produced by UNESCO. His work focuses on international education policy, education statistics, and global monitoring initiatives. In particular, he examines education indicators, governance frameworks, and the role of international organisations in shaping global education policy agendas.

Sheena Bell

Postdoctoral Fellow at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto. She has over fifteen years of experience in education development with the United Nations, RTI and other agencies. Specialising in issues relating to: middle tier leadership, out-of-school children, household survey analysis, policy analysis, project management, and qualitative research.

Matthias Decuypere

Professor of School Development and Governance at the Zurich University of Teacher Education. His research adopts an international, macro-level perspective on educational policymaking and governance. He focuses on how distinct global developments in governance (e.g., behavioural governance; platform governance; synthetic governance) affect local school practices.

Sara Ebling

Professor of Language, Technology and Accessibility at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of the University of Zurich. Based in the field of computational linguistics, her research focuses on language-based assistive technologies in the context of persons with disabilities. The focus is on basic and application-oriented research into the development and reception of these technologies.

Inés Dussel

Researcher and Professor at the Department of Educational Research, CINVESTAV Mexico City, Mexico. Her research interests focus on the relationships among knowledge, schooling, and politics, in a historical and cultural approach. She is currently studying the intersections between schools and digital visual culture, and has developed comparative research projects on the impact of digital technologies in teacher education

Felicitas Acosta

Professor and researcher, Universidad Nacional de General Sarmiento / Universidad de San Andrés (Argentina). A comparative education scholar whose research focuses on education reform, secondary education expansion, and policy transfer in Latin America. She has contributed to studies on global education agendas and their local reinterpretations in national systems.

Wiltrud Weidinger Meister

Professor of Education at the Zurich University of Teacher Education. Her work focuses on international education projects, teacher professional development, and the promotion of life skills and future competencies among students. She leads and collaborates on projects aimed at improving education quality and peer learning in schools and universities, particularly in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.

Johannes Westberg

Professor of Theory and History of Education, University of Groningen (Netherlands). A historian of education whose work focuses on the social and economic history of schooling. His research explores school finance, school architecture, early childhood institutions, and teachers’ professional lives. He serves on editorial boards of several major journals in the history of education.

Illan Acher

Amnesty International, Human Rights Education manager. He works at the intersection of human rights and education in the digital age with Amnesty International, the Council of Europe and Fondation Botnar, and previously with UN Human Rights in Geneva, Dakar and New York.
